Part two

The remainder of January was relatively peaceful, but productive. I got the opportunity to work extensively with my mannequins, resulting in me successfully trying out some new styles on them. I also decided to begin working with an underclasswoman with whom I shall be teaching various basic styles, in an effort to keep this venture alive at Emma Willard. In addition, I made plans to visit a salon in February.

The Shampooing Problem

In February, I continued expanding my knowledge on hair care, particularly when it comes to washing ones hair. Here are my takeaways:- Different hair types have different suggested wash times, partly due to the rate of sebum- the oil on your scalp-produces, in addition to how curly your hair is. As a result, finer and straighter hair tends to allow the oil to spread down the hair shaft faster, thus making it greasier quicker.  In comparison, the curlier ones hair is, the more difficult it is for sebum to travel down the hair shaft, thus simultaneously allowing hair to be less greasy, and making it more dryer and more prone to be brittle. As a result, many people with curly hair types tend to have longer spaces between their wash days.  However, it is suggested that one should wash their hair, for straighter hair types, 3 times a week, and or curly hair types, at maximum once every 10 days.  Both overwashing and underwashing can lead to complications, with overwashing leaving hai

December Blog Post

December was quite hectic, for as a senior, I was involved in Emma Willard's longstanding tradition of Revels- our Senior Play.  Immediately after that, I flew out to Dominica, which, unfortunately, due to the devastating impacts of Hurricane Maria, was lacking in electricity and subsequently Wi-Fi. Luckily, not only did I get to dye my own hair red in Dominica but, at Emma, I was given the opportunity to try my hand at Emma in extension crotcheting, as I did a girls hair for Revels, as it was a formal event.  I fully intend to continue to style heads in January and the upcoming months with renewed vigor and creativity.

Autobiography

Hi there! I am Adayah Balthazar, a 17-year-old West Indian born and raised under a mango tree in Dominica. In my country, good hair care and elaborate hairstyles are rather emphasized. My mother, whom I lived with there, is well trained in various applications of hair styling, and often did my hair for me. While I did enjoy it, I also picked up numerous helpful tips and tricks from her. In 2016 though, upon realizing that I was going to school in America soon, I gave heed to the beckoning hands of the Hair World ™ . From then on, I began trying out multiple new hairstyles on my mother and me. When I came to America, my skill in and love for the subject grew exponentially. During my time at Emma, I have gotten to help and educate girls, work with multiple hair types, learn more about haircare, and get better styling hair. I aim to continue to learn and grow throughout this year, and continue to help and assist girls in that aspect however I can.
